When John Barbour began J Barbour & Sons in 1894 in South Shields, we are sure he did not imagine his outerwear would become a staple fashion item decades later.

Barbour stocked outerwear such as boiler suits and supplied coats and jackets to many of the ship builders and seamen to protect them from the worst of the weather. The classic wax jackets are still being hand produced to this day.
